The Village of Greenport is an incorporated village within the Town of Southold, meaning it has its own autonomous government, headed by a five-member group of lawmakers, known as the Greenport Village Board of Trustees, headed by the village's mayor. Although the one-square mile village has its own governing body, Greenport does rely on the Town of Southold for certain services.

David Nyce was elected Mayor of the Village of Greenport in March, 2007, ending what had been known as the end of the Kapell era at the tail end of the village's revitalization as a tourist destination. Nyce, a recent transplant to the village, has said that he plans to take the existing positive qualities of the village and move forward with them, while creating new, innovative and exciting reasons for visiting the Village of Greenport. Including a push to revitalize the village's long tradition as an arts community. Nyce is a fine furniture maker and co-owner of the Benton/Nyce Gallery in Greenport.
